I have spent hours looking through keychains and other “named” products over the years searching for my kids names. I have never been able to find both of their names and there is no chance I will find my husbands name printed on anything. Doesn’t everyone want things with their name on it?
I made these Santa ornaments from Dollarama kits and added our names. My youngest leaned to sew and made his own. He’s so proud of the finished product and I’m pretty proud of him.

These “wine sleeves” used to be part of my husbands sweater until it had an unfortunate adventure in the washing machine.
I measured the height of the bottle, sewed the sleeve closed, cut the sleeve off the sweater and tried the top closed with ribbon.
I saw this idea when I was shopping last Christmas. I took a picture with every intention of making them last year. Here we are a year later and I can finally delete the photo reminder.
These are made from a tree branch from our yard. My husband cut these up into disks years ago after drying the branch for months. My son and I drew snowflakes on the wood discs and I drilled many, many holes. We sewed the snowflakes with red twine (from the dollar store) using a large needle. Then screwed hooks and added twine to hang them on the tree.

Quilted Fabric Ornaments
Many, many years ago my Nana used to make these quilted fabric ornaments. She made the red one pictured above. I love opening the boxes of ornaments each year and reminiscing about past Christmases.
I thought that I would try making a few quilted ornaments and put my own spin on them. My quilted ornaments are made mainly from my husband’s old dress shirts. I am up-cycling, and adding a little of his personality into our decor and Christmas.
Every year I make an ornament for each of my kids so that when they grow up they will have ornaments from their childhood for their trees. They both chose their own fabrics, the red one is for my oldest, and the black one is for my youngest.

It’s the 12th day of Christmas today, or maybe even day 13 but if you are like me then perhaps you have lost track of the days.
My oldest saw kids making these at school this week and decided that he wanted to make one too. I know it’s hard to believe but I had all of the materials on hand. This was his first sewing project so I am a pretty proud mom. I’m impressed my 8 year old would initiate this on his own, and follow through to completion. Perhaps crafting is genetic?

A Sewn Stocking.
Canada is having a big birthday tomorrow! 150 years young.
We celebrate Canada Day every year but this is a special year so I made special shirts. I could have bought Canada shirts but where is the fun in that? Historically we have made flag hand print shirts which I love, but this year called for something extra special.
We live in a great country so get out and celebrate on July 1st. Happy Canada Day!

On the second day of Christmas my true love made for me…A Santa pillow. I saw one of these in a store and it was more than $50.00, which is a little out of my snack bracket for a Christmas pillow. Knowing that I had 2 red cushion covers and inserts at home I figured that I could whip some up for a fraction of the cost. I am adding the stores where I got the supplies not because they are sponsoring this post but because if you want to make these it is advantageous to know where to get supplies.
As I was making Christmas Sock monkeys (on a Saturday night after most of a bottle of wine) I got to thinking that if the socks had meaning the monkey would be more than just a decoration. My mind went on a bit of a spiral and I ended up thinking about the family from my son’s class that lost their dad & husband. The father was a member of the Canadian military and died on leave on the way home to see his family.
Before I sound like a complete nutter, we see this family everywhere, our kids are the same age, they go to school together, our youngest go to a play group together and our kids have swimming lessons together. So in the school yard bright and early Monday morning I approached the mom. I told her that I was thinking about them on the weekend and I explained my idea about turning her late husbands socks into sock monkeys for her kids. It was a slightly awkward conversation because I was asking for her late husbands socks and I have no idea how that conversation can be anything but awkward, but she brought me the socks a couple of days later.
When I started working on the sock monkeys I was in tears because one of the socks had pink paint on the toe and heel which I later confirmed came from painting their daughter’s room. As I worked on these monkeys I thought about my own family and how I can’t imagine the pain of this family and the strength of the mom. It’s my hope that these monkeys bring them comfort. I know that she was going to save them and give them to the kids for Christmas which made me very happy.
In addition to my own Grandfather who we affectionately called Poppy, I will be thinking about this family and all of the others that serve and have served our country on Remembrance Day.
I make one pair of shoes (from a kit no less) and I think that I am a famous shoemaker! I am killing myself over here laughing, who am I kidding….Ferragamo. But seriously, I made myself a pair of shoes how cool is that. Like real shoes that can be worn outside, not slippers, and I did not just bedazzle a pair of flip-flops (not that there is anything wrong with that). Continue reading
