Crabbing

Crab4This past weekend my oldest was invited to a birthday party. The day before we hosted a Canada Day party and I may have had a few too many celebratory cocktails. I peeled myself out of bed an hour before the party started, and wasn’t feeling 100%. Attending a child’s birthday party hung over is not my favourite activity. But it was all in celebration of Canada so what can I say.

We attend children’s birthday parties many weekends of the year and they all start to blend together but this one was different. I was intrigued to what a crabbing party involved so instead of dropping off my child and picking him up a few hours later I stuck around, and I am so glad that I did. Continue reading

July Reading List

IMGP0962

I always read more in the summer months, as the warm weather draws me outside to sit and soak up the sun. Reading is my perfect warm weather activity, where my mind is engaged and my body is relaxed. I am still taking one masters level course this summer so I am quite surprised that I still read three books in June. I am however shocked that June is over. Seems like the month sped by while I had my head buried in a book.

Eating Beavers

beaver cupcake 2Canada Day is tomorrow! What are you doing to celebrate?

spaleksic's avatarMaking A Life

For our Canada day celebrations I made beaver cupcakes for the little cannucks, or at least that is what they are supposed to look like. For some reason when I made them they did actually resemble the animal, now looking at the pictures I wonder how much wine I consumed while baking. Either way the kiddies ate them up.

If you want to take a run at them this is what I did, perhaps you can improve on it.

  1. baked and iced cupcakes with chocolate frosting
  2. for the tails I used lady finger type cookies cut in half
  3. the flag is helping the tail stand up
  4. ears are M&M’s
  5. eyes are fondant with brown food colouring dots
  6. teeth are white fondant
  7. the nose is the last step and it a red M&M

Peach and Rat Season

It’s that time of year again, the peaches are almost ready. I better not see any rats!

spaleksic's avatarMaking A Life

peaches1Three years ago we bought the house in the city with a yard slightly bigger than a postage stamp.  We moved in at the middle of August and on the third day while I was cleaning a paint tray in the kitchen sink I looked out the window and saw a rat.  A huge ugly long-tailed rat sitting on the kitchen window sill.  I freaked out, completely.  After calling my husband to observe the rat, I called the real estate agent and demanded that he get the compost bin out of the yard.  Sorry about that Brad.  There was no way I was going anywhere near the compost bin to find out what was living in it. When the real estate agent did get the compost bin removed we learned that it was yard waste only.

We also learned that we had a peach tree with rotting fruit which had attracted the rat.  How is it possible…

Birthday Books

photobooksWith the advent of digital photography, photos are snapped and lost into the black hole of technology. Some of us do not ever get the photos out of the camera, and some transfer them to computers but then do little with them. The other day I looked for photos that I took last October at the pumpkin patch, and I could not find them. I could not even remember which camera I took them with. I know I took them but finding them has proven to be a challenge. Continue reading

Watch out Ferragamo

Shoes7I make one pair of shoes (from a kit no less) and I think that I am a famous shoemaker! I am killing myself over here laughing, who am I kidding….Ferragamo. But seriously, I made myself a pair of shoes how cool is that. Like real shoes that can be worn outside, not slippers, and I did not just bedazzle a pair of flip-flops (not that there is anything wrong with that). Continue reading

Minecraft-ING

minecraft header watermarkMy seven year old is obsessed with Minecraft. I hear a lot of “Mom did you know, in Minecraft……” which is about where I zone out because I really know very little about Minecraft. However, I am interested in expanding upon his interests. I think it is great that he is so passionate about something, even if it is based on a video game. Instead of incessantly playing video games I want him to build on the creative problem solving skills learned in Minecraft, and apply those skills to other things. Continue reading

Runaway Kindness

SI was reminded this morning of my worst parenting experience. Four years ago, I was 7 months pregnant, and having just entered the last trimester, I was exhausted. It was a Friday afternoon and my husband had just come home from work early. He had been to the doctors earlier in the day and needed a prescription. I was lying in bed reading a book when he got home. He told me that he was going to run out to the pharmacy and get the prescription filled. My oldest who was three started crying, as his dad got ready to go. He really wanted to go with him, but he was still wearing his PJ’s.

Even though it was close to five o’clock, I had failed to get him dressed because on this particular day we didn’t leave the house. I was barely dressed myself with yoga pants and a t-shirt. At this point in my pregnancy, bras were strictly for public appearances, and I had no plans to venture into public. Continue reading

June Reading List

IMGP0962Today I was out and about with a book, which is not an uncommon occurrence. I read quite often in public, and even more frequently at home. Nothing makes my happier than having my face buried in a book, under a blanket with a glass of wine. Or outside in the sun depending on the season.

To clarify I mean a real book made of paper not an electronic device. I prefer books because they feel better, and I have a much easier time reading outside with a paper book, the glare on electronic devices is too much. The blanket is homemade and the wine is white, just so that you get the full picture. Continue reading

THANK YOU

MM4Thank you to all of the people that donated to our walk for the Brain Tumour Foundation. My husband, son who requested donations in lieu of gifts for his 7th birthday and I raised a combined total of $2,395. We walked/ran the 5K route around the University of Victoria yesterday. I ran it with my 7-year-old trainer, while my husband walked with our 3 year old. It was an emotional day as I remembered where I was last year for the walk. Last year I had been recently diagnosed and was in the process of learning about treatment. I could not run because it caused a great amount of pain in my head. However, this year I proudly wore the blue survivor shirt and ran most of the 5K with my seven year old.
