On the Eleventh day of Christmas

On the Eleventh day of Christmas my true love made for me…

Baked Brie

This is a very easy appetizer. It only requires three ingredients, Brie, a package of crescent rolls and jam.

  • Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper
  • Unroll 4 crescent rolls keeping them together and put them on the cookie sheet
  • Place the Brie in the center of the crescent rolls, and put a few tablespoons of jam on top of the Brie
  • Wrap the crescent rolls around the Brie, cover and wrap with the rest of the crescent rolls
  • Bake

Keep crafting & eating 😉

On the Tenth day of Christmas

On the Tenth day of Christmas my true love made me….

Christmas Popcorn

Today was the first day of Christmas vacation for our family. We spent it watching Christmas movies and eating Christmas Popcorn. Tomorrow will be more of the same.

I made air popped popcorn with butter and salt, melted chocolate chips and butter in the microwave. I spread the popcorn on a cookie sheet, mixed in pretzels, plain and peanut M&M’s and drizzled on the melted chocolate.

Keep crafting!

With all my heart

my-valentineHappy Valentines’s Day! I am a celebrator, I celebrate everything. Including Valentine’s Day which my husband lovingly calls a Hallmark holiday.

On a side note, have you seen the price of cards lately? Ridiculous. I pulled out the Valentine’s card that my husband bought me two years ago. I think if you use them over and over again that maybe you can get $5.00 worth. Only three more years to go.

Last year we celebrated Valentine’s day with my parents at the Kennedy Space Station for an out of this world Valentines’ extravaganza. This year the celebration is much more subdued, and will include a giant heart cookie. When I was a kid we would go to the mall and I always wanted one of those giant chocolate chip cookies. Now that I am a grown-up and can operate the oven (most of the time) I figured that I would bake one for the family as a Valentine’s day treat.

I used this recipe but I cut the quantities in half for a medium sizedvalentine-cookie_making-a-life heart shaped cake pan.

Christmas Crafting – Day 10

I have made many gingerbread houses over the years and I am getting much better at it. By getting better I mean I now buy them assembled. Not just pre-baked but pre-made. Baking and assembling gingerbread is for the professionals. It is so hard to get those pieces flat, and then getting them to stay together requires an engineering degree. So skip all of that and go right to the fun part.

Spider Web Cookies

spider-web-cookies-4_making-a-life

I love Pinterest, I pin lots of projects and even make some. BUT it’s very misleading. That whole perfect pinterest thing is a bit much, even for a devout maker like me. Most of my projects look decent, but that is often after many tries, 20 years of crafting experience, and photography skills. I have been hooked on watching the Sweet Ambs Cookie baker on Facebook, and her videos make cookie decorating look so calming. Just a little wiggle here, and a jiggle there and the cookie masterpiece is complete.

Crock Pot Bread

crock-pot-bread-_-making-a-life-4Making my own bread was something that I did years ago before having kids, when I had a smidge more time and no one holding onto my legs while I was cooking. Back then I used a bread maker which simplified the process, but now I have discovered crock pot bread which is just as easy.

I don’t enjoy cooking, I do it out of necessity. I like fancy bread but fancy bread is expensive. I need to save money so that I can get my hair done every 6 weeks, so home made bread it is.

Fourth Birthday

4th-making-a-life_4I really don’t know where the time went. One day he was a baby and the next he is 4. When I was in the midst of diapers, nap-time, breastfeeding, and spoon feeding I though that the baby days would never end. Days dragged on and I waited not so patiently for my husband to get home so that I could get a few moments to myself. Now with a preschooler and a child in grade 2 life revolves around school drop off and pick-ups. We will however, continue to celebrate each passing year as it marks the growth that we have all achieved and of course take loads of photographs.

Date Night Apple Pie 2

making-a-life-apple-pie-1A wonderful friend dropped off a big bag of apples and pears on my doorstep recently. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but fruit flies not so much. It was a race against the fruit flies to do something with all the fruit. We are all fans of apple pie so we had a pie making marathon.

Peach Crepes

Peaches Making A Life 4I am a big fan of eating local in season food. Fresh local fruit just tastes better, especially when I grow it myself. Before you get the wrong idea and imagine me as a farmer tending to my acreage let me explain that we have a few fruit trees on our small postage stamp size yard in the downtown core. In our yard we grow peaches, plums and apples all of which were mature trees when we bought the house 5 years ago. When we made an offer on the house the peach and plum trees looked just like any other tree to me, I honestly had no idea that they were fruit bearing. Imagine my surprise when 4 months later we took possession and found both a peach tree and a rat eating peaches in the yard. Continue reading

Cupcake Sliders

Burger Cupcakes Making A Life

If you are heading to a BBQ this weekend, or hosting a BBQ what are you serving for dessert?  How about cupcake sliders? These are a great conversation starter, plus you might fool the occasional guest into thinking that they are actually meat burgers.

Use your favourite cake recipe or boxed cake mix for the vanilla buns and chocolate patty. If you happen to have a silicone cupcake tray use it, because it means that there are no paper wrappers to remove.
