My newest hobby

Eight months ago I learned the basics of knitting and with a little help from Utube I have been on a knitting rampage ever since.  My first project was a scarf for my four year old, which I have to admit was incredibly boring.  After mastering knitting in a straight line  I attempted a hat for my little guy who was 3 months at the time, and after 2 attempts I had something that resembled a hat and which sort of fit.  Next I was on to slightly more interesting patterns, colours, and textures.  I made tiny mits, thumbless mitts for tiny hands and cigar smoking gloves.  Then I decided that I was ready for socks, and made a pair of socks for my 4 year old figuring if I really screwed them up they were little so not a huge waste of time, and if I made them too small his younger brother could wear them.  The socks turned out to be wearable but not great yet not a total disaster.  Next I was onto sweaters for the kids, which they managed to wear a couple of times before it got too warm here.

My next knitting projects include a sweater for me, and a knit pillow both are finished but not 100% complete.  The most exciting project to date is still in the works it is a knit furniture piece.  I have managed to work my love of furniture and my love of knitting into one object, I can’t wait until it’s done.  Stay tuned for more details.

On the twelfth day of Christmas…Santa made me a fishing game.

Merry Christmas, on the twelfth day of Christmas…Santa made me a fishing game.  This is a present for my 3.5 year old.  Each fish has colour, texture, and pattern.  A friend of mine mentioned that she was going to make this game for her daughter, and I thought what a great idea.  The fish are made of felt, and stuffed with a little cotton batting.  Each fish has a number of items sewn on, to make a counting game from 1-10.  Santa made a little worm, and inside the worms head are 4 earth magnets, which allows for the catching of multiple fish.  I am hoping that there will be hours of play with this new toy.  If he doesn’t like it, I do, so I will just hang it on a wall somewhere.

Thanks for reading the last 12 days, I hope that I have inspired someone to make something.

On the eleventh day of Christmas…my aunt made a glowing gift.

Today I am featuring a crafty project that my aunt created.  Using a glass block (the kind from a glass block window, purchased at home depot) she drilled a hole, inserted a string of white Christmas lights and wrapped the glass block with a ribbon.     It is a nice glowing surprise under the Christmas tree.

On the tenth day of Christmas…my mom made me mittens.

IMGP7568On the tenth day of Christmas my mom made me mittens.  Well sort of.  For my little guy I made thumb-less mittens, and a hat.  I haven’t figured out how to knit the thumbs yet for a pair of mittens for my older guy but I plan on getting a lesson over the holidays.  I am hoping that this little hat is going to fit all season but at this age he seems to be out growing everything over night.

On the ninth day of Christmas…we created a village.

Gingerbread villageWith a little help from my 3 year old we made a gingerbread village.  I have never tried to make a gingerbread house from scratch because it just seems like too much work.  There is nothing wrong with a store bought kit, the fun part is decorating it anyway so why make a giant baking mess for a similar result.  My little guy is eyeing the houses, I wonder how long they will last?

On the eighth day of Christmas…my little elf was crafting.

hankiesI may have created a little crafting monster over the last couple of months.  My 3 year old seems to like making as much as I do.  He has been busy making ornaments, cards, photo frames and most recently hankies.  There is only one person that I know that uses hankies, so Sasha has been hard at work making Christmas hankies for Uncle John.  Using store bought hankies, Sasha is embellishing them with stamps and ink, a perfect project for little hands.

On the seventh day of Christmas…I wrapped a giftcard

Since I have been on mat leave I have found myself watching some daytime TV.  I saw this idea on Steven & Chris, and thought how smart.  So for the gift card receivers on my list, dig through the candy for the real treat.  I bought the little paint cans, inserted the giftcard, and filled up the can with candy.  Not exactly crafting but a creative way to wrap a giftcard.

On the sixth day of Christmas…my true love covered me in chocolate

IMGP7415Sounds yummy, but really I meant peanut butter balls and sugar cookies.  For my birthday this year I got a KitchenAid stand mixer (I know what a lucky girl) and I decided what better time of year than Christmas to give it a good workout.  I whipped up at least 15 dozen treats, sugar cookies, peanut butter balls, and mints.  I signed up for a cookie exchange with some other moms and traded my treats with others for a little more variety, YUMMY.  My go to shop for just about everything, Michael’s had these cute little boxes on sale for $1.00.  With my son’s help we made little tags with card stock and Christmas stickers.  As far as the recipes go, I always just google a type of treat, read the reviews and take it from there, I may or may not remember to bookmark it so it’s always a surprise.  Hope you are hungry.

On the fifth day of Christmas…some lady made me Tea Towels.

I whipped up a bunch of tea towels while I was making the Ho Ho Ho shirts for the kiddies.  These are my go to teacher/host/hostess gift this year.  I don’t want to tell you how little these cost to make just in case you are getting some over the holiday season, but lets just say less than one dollar each plus my elbow grease.  But really it’s the thought that counts right.

On the fourth day of Christmas…my mom made me a stocking.

When I was a kid my mom made us all matching stockings.  Last year she gave them to all of us.  I think that was her not so subtle way of telling us we were all cut off.

Last year I decided to further the tradition of hand made stocking with my family, and with the addition of another little person to our family this year we were short one stocking, and what better excuse to get out the sewing kit.  Last year I bought kits to make stockings and knowing at the time that we would be a larger family at Christmas this year I bought one extra.  As I was hanging the stockings I was reminded that I had to whip up one more.  Even though I had a pattern for these they would be easy enough to create from scratch with two ingredients.  They are made from felt, and hand stitched together with embroidery floss.  We don’t have a fireplace, so the stocking are hung on the banister with care.
