On the last day of Christmas Crafting my sister made for me…a Messy Bun Hat. Right now there is quite the knitting trend happening, with the creation of the messy bun hat. My sister sent me a message a few weeks ago hinting not so subtly that she might like me to make her a messy bun hat. So I did. There are a few patterns floating around on Ravelry (a knitting pattern site) but not many. When I can’t find what I want in the gauge or size I need I make it up. Here is my messy bun pattern if you wish to whip one up.
Materials:
- Bulky weight #5 yarn – 3 stitches per inch
- set of 4 double points and or 22″ circular needles – US 10/6 mm
- large needle
Pattern:
- ROW 1: CO48
- ROW 2: Join and K2 P2* repeat to end of row
- ROW 3-12: Repeat ROW 2
- ROW 13: Knit one round
- ROW 14: Purl one round
- ROW 15: Knit one round
- ROW 16: Purl one round
- ROW 17-32: Knit 16 rounds
- ROW 33: K6, K2TOG * repeat to end of row
- ROW 34 – Knit one round
- ROW 35 – K5, K2TOG * repeat to end of row
- ROW 36 – Knit one round
- ROW 37 – K4, K2TOG *repeat to end of row
- ROW 38 – Knit one round
- ROW 39 – K3, K2TOG * repeat to end of row
- ROW 40 – Knit one round
- ROW 41 – Cast off
- Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to close with a needle (hole at top is 2 7/8-3″ in diameter)

Making A Life 
After row 16, the pattern goes back to row 8…??? I’m there, and not sure how many rows to knit. Also, I assume you closed by threading the tail through the stitches? How big an opening should I leave? Thanks…and thank you for sharing your pattern.

Hi Annabelle, seems that I made a mistake in the pattern. I have corrected it. The opening is about 3″ but it depends on how tightly you cast off. Merry Christmas. Sarah

Hi there,
Thank-you for the pattern. I was so excited to make the hat but am having difficulty with 48 stitches being enough for the opening to fit over my adult daughter’s head. I tried using a larger needle but that did not work either. I have now gone back to the size 10 needle and I cast on 84 stitches. I am not sure that is going to work out either. You really only cast on 48 stitches? Most hats call for many more, even for a child’s hat. Could you please clarify for me?

Hi Dianne. yes I only cast on 48 stitches. The weight of the yarn, and how tight you knit are factors. The gauge is 3 stitches per inch. Sarah

I have seen them made on utube with a rubber band closure which makes a lot of sense too me but they start at the top and work down. if we could just figure out how to get those stitches on a rubber band by knitting from the bottom to the top it would be wonderfull! then you could substitute any hat pattern you have.

Love your pattern! It was easy and quick. However, at the end, do you cast off (passing one stitch over the other) or thread the loops with a needle? You say both. Thanks! Susan
