I saw a super cute picture of a blanket with a heart on it so I searched Ravelry and Pinterest for a pattern and came up empty, so I used a plain blanket pattern and incorporated a heart. This is the perfect Valentine’s gift for my two littlest loves. I hope they get lots of snuggles in these warm wooly blankets.

Valentine’s Day Blanket
Materials
- 18oz (3 balls) Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Fisherman
- 6oz (1 ball) Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Navy
- 13(9mm) knitting needles
The Pattern
Cast on 75 stitches. When introducing the alternate colour (AC) carry the unused yarn along the wrong side. Wrap it while knitting with the active colour to carry it. Keep the unused yarn relaxed while carrying it and don’t pull, or the project will become distorted.

How do you carry the color when you alternate? What does the back of the blanket look like?

Hi Kim, it’s called stranding if you want to look up other U tube videos. Here is a video I found for you that might help. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQlc4UQWuzc. On the blankets I made I wrapped every stitch, so that the white was almost hidden behind the heart colour. So really there isn’t a strand in the back that is visible like the video but the wrap is the same. I hope that the video helps.

First off, LOVE that I finally found a pattern for this! Thank you. I’m working it as we speak. My only question…at row 27 it says to purl…I’m confused cause I though odd rows were knit and even are purl. Is it correct or should I switch it? Thanks!

Hi Stephanie, Oh no looks like I made a mistake. You are right, you can either switch it or add one knit row between 26-27 and then you can follow the rest of the pattern as written, it will be one row longer in length. I am in love with this, and it looks so fast! I have two skeins of Wool Ease Thick and Quick in my stash already, and I know I won’t be able to match the dye lot. How much of the third skein do you need? I’m toying with the idea of increasing the size of the heart until I could get away with the two I already have for the outside. Thanks!

Hi Charlotte, each ball does about a third of the blanket. You can always make it smaller to try and use only 2 balls. Good luck. Sarah

Where do you find balls that are 18 ounces? I am only finding them in 6oz size – in which case, would i need 9 balls of the fisherman to do??

Hi, yes you do carry the opposite colour on the back of the heart when you purl. I posted an image of the back side of the heart which might give you a better idea of what to expect. Sarah

Hoping this is still active!! I’ve started working on this and am at the point of introducing the new color, did you bring the heart color from the first stitch in the row? Or bring it in at the stitch? Did you drop the AC at its last stitch in row and pick it back up as you go back across? or strand the AC behind the MC for the rest of the row? Does that make sense?!

HI Danielle, I started the heart colour at the first stitch (bottom of heart). Dropped the AC colour (it’s not carried behind the MC) but carry the MC across the back of the heart (AC). I think that’s what you were asking. Now does my answer make sense?

Hi there I love this blanket! I just finished mine the other day with the exact yarn and needle size but it does not measure 36 “x36″
It’s measuring 29″x 23”! What am I doing wrong?!?!?

Hi Kim, I am going to say that you knit tighter than I do. I am a fairly loose knitter and I don’t pull the yarn tight as I wrap it. If you knit tight then your stitches are closer together (tighter weave) making the finished size smaller.

I hope this is still active because I need a little help. This is the first time I’ve tried stranding, but I think I understand it. I am at Row 27 in the pattern and find it takes me SO long to untangle my yarn after wrapping the carried yarn when it’s time for AC. I am using circular needles so I have to wait until the end of the row to untangle everything and it is taking forever. What am I missing?
When you wrap the unused yarn with the active color, are you passing the entire ball of yarn through so it doesn’t get tangled?

How can I keep the AC and unused yarn from tangling when I’m wrapping and carrying? Since I’m knitting using circular needles, the wrapping and carrying is creating a snarled mess. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to pass the entire ball of yarn through when wrapping?

Thank you. I did watch that before starting and it does explain the carry and wrap quite well.
I do see in the video that her yarns wrap up together too, but since she’s in the round, it’s probably not as big a deal for her just to wind the balls back undone.
I’ll keep trying to figure out how to keep them untangled.

I have make this blanket twice now. I think it makes a great car seat blanket, as I knit tightly. My only problem is row 81. I don’t like the way the back looks at that point, so I just knit the last rows.
